Where The Focus Clinic Began

Built From a Gap in Care for Adults Living With ADHD

My commitment to this work began while I was working alongside a pediatrician with a strong focus on ADHD. During those clinics, I started to notice a consistent and troubling pattern: ADHD rarely affected just the child.

In many cases, one or both parents showed clear signs of ADHD themselves. They often spoke openly about how difficult it had been to find support as adults. Many shared that they had raised concerns with their own healthcare providers, only to feel dismissed or told that their struggles were not significant enough to warrant assessment or treatment.

At the time, access to adult ADHD care was extremely limited. Few psychiatrists were accepting adult ADHD referrals, and even fewer were willing to provide ongoing treatment. I saw firsthand how this gap in care affected not only daily functioning, but also relationships, self-esteem, and overall mental health.

Witnessing this disconnect made it clear that something needed to change.

I went on to create a program focused specifically on adult ADHD, designed to provide thorough assessment, education, and evidence-based treatment in a supportive and respectful environment. What followed was incredibly meaningful. Time and time again, patients expressed a profound sense of relief simply from being heard and validated, often for the first time.

With appropriate diagnosis, education, and care, many individuals began to understand themselves in a new way. They gained clarity, self-compassion, and the tools needed to make lasting changes in their lives.

This work continues to be deeply fulfilling. Supporting individuals with ADHD through assessment and treatment is not only clinically impactful, it is genuinely life-changing. That belief remains at the heart of everything we do at The Focus Clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about your upcoming experience with The Focus Clinic.

The services at The Focus Clinic are provided by nurse practitioners who are specifically trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and medical management of ADHD. Unfortunately, nurse practitioner services are not covered by OHIP.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs), also known as Registered Nurses in the extended class, are registered nurses who have met additional education, experience and exam requirements set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). They are authorized to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe medication and other treatment. NPs are accountable to the College of Nurses of Ontario's practice standards and guidelines

At The Focus Clinic, we believe in a holistic approach to care. Being assessed and diagnosed with ADHD is just one piece of the puzzle that makes you unique. We will provide you with a letter that you can bring to your primary care provider to inform them of the assessment we completed and its results. This will ensure that your primary care provider is aware of your new diagnosis (or that based on our assessment we confirmed you do not have ADHD). This will allow you and your primary care provider to better understand your needs. If you prefer us to send the letter on your behalf, we would be happy to do so!

ADHD can manifest in various ways, often impacting daily life and activities. Some of the common signs include:

  • Difficulty maintaining attention during conversations, meetings, or while reading.
  • Frequently feeling overwhelmed with numerous thoughts.
  • Being easily distracted.
  • Making frequent, seemingly minor mistakes.
  • Feeling restless or frequently fidgeting.
  • Talking excessively or often interrupting others.
  • Regularly misplacing important items or being forgetful.
  • Initiating many tasks but struggling to complete them.
  • Consistently experiencing challenges with time management.
  • Making impulsive decisions or actions without thorough consideration.

It is important to note that while everyone may experience these signs and symptoms occasionally, individuals with ADHD encounter them frequently and across various aspects of their lives.

There are three types of ADHD:

  • Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: This type is characterized by symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity without significant inattentiveness. Individuals may fidget, have difficulty staying seated, or act impulsively without considering consequences.
  • Inattentive Type: This type is marked by significant inattention and distractibility without hyperactive or impulsive behaviors. Individuals may struggle to pay attention to details, follow instructions, or organize tasks.
  • Combined Type: This type meets the criteria for both hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive types. Individuals exhibit a combination of symptoms from both categories, making it the most common form of ADHD.

Understanding these distinctions is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Each type may require a tailored approach to manage symptoms and improve overall functioning.
